Meghalaya  

Situated in North East India bordered by the Indian state of Assam and neighboring country of Bangladesh. It is known for being the wettest place on earth and is one of the most beautiful states in India. Any short trip to the north east regions of India will undoubtedly be the most bewitching vacation for all the adventure lovers. The reasons are many but destinations are limited. Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are some of the reason rest is blessed by nature. Meghalaya is one of the smallest and beautifully located states with its capital at Shillong. It was for long a summer retreat of the British. Beautifully kept golf course and several English country cottages testify to this. Meghalaya literally means the abode of the cloud. The state invites tourist with open arms to spend some time in its lap of nature. It is one of the most beautiful states in India. Abundant rainfall, sun-shine, virgin forests, high plateaus, tumbling waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, meandering streamlets and the hospitable people makes the state a tourist paradise. Some of the popular adventure activities being promoted in the state are hard and soft treks, rock climbing, boat race and indigenous sports of the Khasis, Jaintias and Garos. Caving at present is the most vibrant and visible tourism activity in the state, followed by nature walks and treks on the numerous living root bridges. Meghalaya has large area covered under forest, Meghalaya has diverse wildlife. Apart from the well known Balpakram National Park in South Garo Hills, there are the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve in West Garo Hills, the Siju Wildlife Sanctuary in South Garo Hills and the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Ri Bhoi District. Four major festivals of the three tribes of Meghalaya are the Wangala Dance of Garo, Shad Suk Mynsiem and Nongkrem Dance Festival of Khasi, and the Behdeinkhlam Festival of Jaintia. Autumn to spring is the best time to visit the state. Summers are mild, winters are also pleasant and monsoon is severe. One more specialty of this state is Caving. One who enjoy caving, this state is just the one place for it has 600 caves in the state and yet many more has to be explored. The deepest and longest of the caves are located on the hills of Khasi Hills. Each year cavers from all around the world explore the hills to find new caves and map them.  Meghalaya also offers a variety of handcraft items which includes hand woven shawls, orange, flower, honey, black mushrooms and cane work. September to April is the best season to experience the best of Meghalaya. People are colorful and hospitable. Major tribes dominating the state are Khasis the largest followed by the Garos.  Other groups include the Jaintias, Hmar, Kuki, Lakhar, Mikir, Koch, Rajbongshi, Boro, Hajong, Dimasa, Rabha, etc.

Communication

Airway – Its just 100 kilometers drive from Shillong to Guwahati. Nearest major airport is Guwahati close to Meghalaya. Guwahati has direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, and Bagdogra on regular basis. Small but other airport is at Umroi only 35 kilometers from Shillong connecting this lovely town of Tura by air. There are chopper / helicopter service from Guwahati to Shillong also. Railway – No rail system in Meghalaya exist hence the nearest railhead is Guwahati Railway Station. At a distance of 103 kilometers is just 2 – 3 hours drive and the road are decent. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail with number of trains plying daily to all over Indian cities and town. Roadway - Shillong is connected by a long road in between high hills and deep elevations with the rest of the country via Guwahati. Silchar, Garo Hills and the rest of north east India is all connected by road. Regular bus service is to reach Shillong from various locations are available. Jowai Nongstoin, Mawkynrew, Umling, Tura, Williamnagar, Shella, Mawsynram, Umsning, Nongpoh, Baghmara, Sohra or Cherrapunji, and Mawphlang are well connected by road.
