Darjeeling

Darjeeling is one of the heritage destinations of the region. Nestled among the rolling mountains with the glistening mount Kanchenjunga towering over the horizon is worth visiting. The Queen of Hills as popularly known provides a perfect gateway for those seeking to be in harmony with nature. Land of the muscatel flavored Darjeeling tea revered by connoisseurs across the globe also adds flavour to the tour. During the visit to Darjeeling a day off and visit to any Tea factory is a must for the tourist. The world heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway where the century old miniature steam engine still chugs uphill vying for space with the fast disappearing Land Rovers are must see and worth enjoying. Darjeeling is the oldest hill station of India situated in northern tip of West Bengal and is known for Tea, Tourism and Timber. Darjeeling has several British - style public schools and some heritage school with colonial structure, which attract students from India and neighbouring countries. The people consisting of Nepalese, Tibetan, Bengali and other ethno-linguistic groups helps this place to be a metropolitan taste. Popular places to visit include Tiger Hill, Mall, Shrubbery park, Batasia Loop and the War Memorial, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park specially the Snow Leopard Breeding Center, etc.

 

DHR popularly known as the Toy Train is one way of travel from Siliguri. The DHR was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site years ago. The train runs from Kuseong to Darjeeling and one should enjoy the unique experience of viewing the landscape through which the toy train passes. Tiger Hill visit is must, if guest want to see the sunrise or sunset on the beautiful snow - covered Kanchenjunga. Japanese Peace Pagoda is an impressing building constructed by Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan - Myohoji Order. Nightingale Park / Shrubbery Park is a beautiful park nearly 3 kilometers from Darjeeling Railway Station. Here cultural programs are organized daily during the tourist season. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is most visited spot in here and is adjacent to Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park. The park consists of rare species of fauna found in the Himalayan Region. One can also visit Singalila National Park, which is at the vicinity of Darjeeling. Other than one must not forget to buy some Darjeeling Tea from the gate of any of the factory guest, when in Darjeeling avoid buying tea from shop except the popular one.

Kurseong

Kurseong is a small settlement just halfway between Siliguri to Darjeeling route. It is nearly 40 kilometers and is 1 ½ - 2 hour drive from Darjeeling and nearly 45 kilometers from Siliguri i.e. half way between Siliguri to Darjeeling route. It is the unofficial headquarter of the Tea Estate and factory. One can move around the town, tea gardens and parks. Mirik and Kuseong are both much more mesmerizing only for the Himalaya and the Tea Estate. Kurseong is the first place perhaps to start with Tea Tourism. People from all over the globe visit this region to enjoy Tea. Places of Interest in Kurseong are many. Among the most popular one are Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Museum at Kurseong railway station, Museum of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on Giddha pahar, Heritage churches such as St Andrew's church, St Paul's, Makaibari Tea Estate, Eagle's Crag (Durpin Dhara) or trek to Deer's Park, etc. Tea Tourism and Home stay is popular in this region including nearby places like Mirik. Tea Estate offering stays are Makaibari, Runglee Rungliot, Saurini, Selim Hills, etc. There are many a home stay including Chatakpur, Buggura, Kettle Valley, Sittong, Bunkulung, Rangbang, etc are quite popular and is best for leisure holiday.
The place is not so crowded, it have some historical locations and buildings. It is quite popular among foreign tourist.  It is also one of the historical backgrounds with amny a great leader visiting this place of the region. Tea tourism is most popular in this region as there are few options and infrastructure available here. Some of the places to visit staying at Kurseong are Giddapahar, Eagle’s craig, Chatakpur, Darjeeling, etc. The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) nearly 50 kilometers with regular trains plying to most of the major stations of India. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and is nearly 50 kilometers. It is well connected with the rest of the country with daily flight to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, etc.

Mirik

The world’s most beautiful tea estate are situated in this part of the globe. Mirik has become a popular tourist destination for its climate, natural beauty and easy accessibility from Siliguri and Darjeling. It is roughly 55 kilometers from Siliguri and takes an hour and a half drive. The centre of attraction is Sumendu Lake for the new comer, which is surrounded by beautiful garden on one side and pine trees on other side. Places of Interest in and around Mirik are Sumendu Lake, Rameetay Dara, Bokar Monastery, Tingling View Point, Tea Gardens, Orange Orchards / Orchids, Mirik Church, etc. This town of Mirik is nearly half way between Siliguri and Darjeeling and is adjacent to Nepal border town of Pashupati. Trek to Sandakphu starts from Mirik. One has to stay at Mirik and next morning from Manaybhanjan has to start the trek from or via Chitrey – Tomglu – Gauribas - Sandakphu – Falut – Gorkey – Rimbik – Rammam, there are quite a few diversions from Sandakphu and Falut but the classical route is the one mentioned above. The trek generally starts from Manaybhanjan close to Mirik through Singalila National Park. Tea Tourism and Home stay is popular in this region including nearby places like Mirik, Palmajua, Chamong Tea estate, Sourini Tea Estate, Bunkulung, Monju, etc. Tea Estate offering stays are Makaibari, Runglee Rungliot, Saurini, Selim Hills, etc are all close by. Home stay includes Bunkulung, Palmajua, Tathagata Guest house, Chatakpur, Kettle Valley, Sittong, Bunkulung, Rangbang, etc are also located in this region. These are offbeat destinations and are generally not so crowded. This places are quite popular among Indian as well as foreign tourist.  It is also one of the historical towns of the region and has few British houses with historical attachment. Tea tourism is most popular in this region with few tea factory allows tourist to visit their manufacturing unit. Infrastructure is not so developed yet one can spend couple of days. One can visit small villages around the region to know about their cultural and ethnic values. Orange Orchard, Tea Estate and cardamom Cultivation can be seen in most of the nearby settlement. The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) with regular trains plying to most of the major stations of India, it is nearly 55 kilometers from Kuseong and is one to one and half hours drive via Rohini. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) nearly 55 kilometers. It is well connected with the rest of the country with daily flight to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, etc.

Kalimpong

Kalimpong is a historical town. History tells us that the original inhabitants of this region were the Lepcha tribes. At present the region is being dominated by Sikkimese, Bhutanese, Tibetans and Nepalese kingdoms and their cultural, religious heritage, etc. Kalimpong attracts tourist in hordes and throughout the year due to its natural beauty and the pleasant climatic condition. Places of interest in and around Kalimpong are Pedong, Lava, Lolaygaon, Ramdhura, Iccheygaon, Rikissum, Sillery, Ralliekhola, Reshi Khola, Damsang, Algarah, Deollo, etc. Kalimpong is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Eastern Himalayan and is almost equidistant from Darjeeling, Pelling, Lataguri in Dooars, and Gangtok. Nearby places are Aritar, Namchi, Jorethang, Mongpoo, Tinchuley, Takdah, Chitrey, Mongsong, etc.

It offers visitors sightseeing with outdoor activities like rafting, village walks, rock climbing, birding, angling, day treks, paragliding, biking, etc. Other leisure activities includes shopping, visit to Nusery, visiting Dr, Grahams Home, Durpin Dara, etc and relaxing opportunities in a safe and friendly environment for a minimum of three days, if not more. Kalimpong is nearly 80 kilometers from Siliguri and is two and half hours drive via Teesta, it is alos 90 kilometers from Gangtok and takes about the same time by drive. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and the nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB). It is nearly 2 hours drive by car from station and airport. Places of interest near Kalimpong are many like Pedong, Lava, Lolaygaon, Rikissum, Chumarchein, Reshi Khola, Rishyap, etc. Tourist activities available here are rafting, cycling, trekking, mountain biking, paragliding, birding, angling, rock climbing, etc. Kalimpong is also known for Neora Valley Park. Lava / Rishyap

Lava is a small hamlet situated nearly 34 kilometers east of Kalimpong and the way is via Algarah in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. Lava is situated at an altitude of approximately 2138 meters / 7016 feet. It is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snow in winter. It is the entry point to the Neora Valley National Park and is quite forested. The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch. The verdant forests are a popular spot for tourist, trekking and various activity seekers. Lava is a popular and favorite tourist destination for all weather. Wild animals such as the Himalayan Black Bear and barking deer can be spotted in the forested area. A Buddhist monastery is present on one of the hills of Lava and is quite popular among the followers. Notable sites close to Lava include Changey Waterfalls, Kolakham, Rishyap, Lolaeygaon, Charkhole and Jamgyong Kongtrul Monastery. A picturesque spot in the suburbs of kalimpong and forms a nice circuit with Lolaygaon, Pedong, Ralleikhola, Rikissum, Damsang, Rishyap or Kolakham. The conifer forests under the worm glow of sun with colorful birds will enthrall any visitor to a new dimension. The view of the silvery peaks of Greater Himalayan snow ranges or the smiling children of local ethnic villages, soaked in simplicity and hospitality, will give guest a sense of satisfaction. The Lava Monastery and Neora valley Interpretation center is worth visiting. There are a number of places one can visit specially Tiffin Dara from where one gets a panoramic view of the Kanchendzonga range. Nearly 6 kilometers south of the bazaar is the Samebiong Tea Garden popular for its panoramic views / sunrise from Ghanti Dara is al;so worth watching. Those interested in monasteries may drive 7 kilometers to Gitkolbung (Guruchukhi) monastery nearby. 12 kilometers drive through the forests to Changey waterfalls is a delightful experience but the road is treacherous. Kolagham, Charkhole, Samthar are also situated in this region and are offbeat destinations where guest can spend couple of days and enjoy the beauty of the nature. Rishyap is just 4 kilometer walk with a view of Himalayan peaks. Rishyap is  an idyllic spot for romancing the moonlight with a light barbecue and bonfire. 9 kilometers Jeep able road or only 3 kilometers easy pleasure trek from Lava leads to a beautiful small hamlet Rishyap / Rishap. It is amidst the hidden hills of Neora Valley with a nearly 300 degree visible mountain ranges.

Loleygaon

Tour to Lava, Lolaygaon, Rishyap, Pedong, and surrounding areas are organized by us. Loleygaon is 24 kilometers from Lava and Rishyap is nearly 19 kilometers. Lolaygaon is beautifully located rather nested in a setting of Mount Kanchenjunga or the Himalayan range in the backdrop and is surrounded by luxuriant forest.  At an altitude of 1847 meters in the midst of undulating slopes and adorned with towering trees Lolaygaon is the place of wilderness and is a all season destination.  Kanchendzonga at dawn or sunrise and sunset from Jhandidara is a treat to watch and enjoy. A visit to the Heritage Forest of Lolaygaon is a must to get a feel of the exquisite botanical and zoological richness. The popular Canopy Walk over the century old mossy Oak and Cypress in the Heritage Forest is a nice experience. The all-pervading melodious silence is an excellent spot for a restful and quiet holiday. Loleygaon is a small Lepcha village situated in an extreme end of a Himalayan Ridge and is one of the popular tourist destinations. Just on the outskirt of Neora forest with heritage pine forest with excellent views of the Himalayan range makes it a place for Leisure holiday or small trek. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 1675 meters. It is a serene misty hamlet immensely popular among the tourist presents a landscape with ultimate splendor of nature. It is a fabulous destination for the lovers of wildlife in their natural habitat and is pretty cold all year round. The age-old forest of towering pine, cypress and oaks with their mossy trunk is an ideal place for watching endangered Himalayan species like black bear and mountain goats, numerous colorful birds, butterflies, rare orchids, etc. Lolaygaon can be reached from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) or Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or Siliguri with a 4 - 4 ½ hour’s drive covering 127 kilometers via Sevoke, Chitrey, Raleikhola, Kalimpong or via Gorubathan, Bhuttabari, Lava. Kalimpong, the nearest town is 32 kilometers from Loleygaon. Sun Rise Point at Ramitey Dara known for the sun sets with a golden view of the mount Kanchenjunga on the backdrop is something guest can cherish for long.

Pedong / Sillery / Reshikhola

Pedong is situated nearly 20 kilometers from Kalimpong in the Indian state of West Bengal. It has come to limelight recently for being an offbeat destination. It is a destination in the evergreen and mystical hills of Darjeeling district throughout the year. Pedong is place to look for something new, something different, something authentic with options of various adventure and home stay that has recently being developed by the locals. It is a place with beautiful blend of history, culture and nature. Pedong is situated at an altitude of nearly 5000 feet, the altitudinal variation ranges from the sub tropical at the Reshi Valley to Alpine at the Damsang ridge. The terrain is easily negotiable and provides some of the most breath taking views of the landscape including the majestic Kanchenjunga. Churches and Monastery visit is a must for tourist and are walk able distant from all the nearby resort. Sillery is a small settlement near Kalimpong and closer to Pedong nearly 4 kilometers. The road is bad but the place worth visiting. It is an intrinsic part of the socio-cultural landscape and offers an insightful peek into village life. Small trek, walk to the silent valley and idle for leisure trip are the options here. Now it’s bit crowded with home stay hence the offbeat tag no longer indicate Sillery. Situated at an altitude of nearly 6000 feet in a village of nearly 20 odd families and that too in the middle of a forested land is a beautiful settlement and an ideal location for tourist to hang around. One wakes up to the sounds of birds chirping to a tune of a new day, a sunrise right before your eyes with Mount Kanchenjunga in the backdrop like all other Himalayan stay, all these work as a part of an alarm system that nature has devised. A hike for about an hour from the nearest main road or a drive for 30 minutes through a cobbled stone road nearly 4 kilometers takes one to Sillerygaon from Pedong. 15 minutes from Sillery is Ramite Dara. Only word can be used that there is no language to describe the beauty and the silence. From Ramitey Dara one can see the sunset and feel privileged to be one among the few to have seen the sunset from this place. Reshikhola as the name indicates is situated near a stream (Khola). Reshikhola is ideally located with rustic setting, and with many options of trek to Mulkharka Lake, drive to Jelep La pass, sightseeing to Lampokhori (Aritar Lake), Village walk, visit to orange orchard, etc. Angling and birding are the two other major options.  It is situated in the Kalimpong sub division on the West Bengal – Sikkim border. One can enjoy the night sky and can spend the night in tent. Tourists can also indulge in luxury of bathing in the river water or cast the net for a light barbecue.  Small trek routes, visit to Orchard or nearby villages is also refreshing.

Sandakphu / Falut

One of the classical routes for trekking and is also a veritable paradise for trekkers and adventure seekers. Trekking is an experience which brings one face to face with the sublime grandeur of the Himalayas. The region is abounds in rhododendrons, magnolias, primulas, orchids, ferns, etc and wildlife worth viewing. Nearly four hundred different species of birds inhabit the forests. Two short routes are Darjeeling - Manaybhanjan - Tonglu - Sandakphu - Return by the same route is nearly 118 kilometers and the other is Darjeeling - Maneybhanjyang - Tonglu - Sandakphu - Phalut and return is nearly 160 kilometers. Other routes which are really enjoyable  are Maneybhanjan – Tonglu – Sandakphu – Phalut – Raman – Rimbik – Palkmajua – Siliguri   or Darjeeling - Maneybhanjan, Tonglu, Sandakphu, Phalut and back, the other is from Siliguri -  Mirik – Maneybhanjan – Tonglu – Sandakphu – Rimbik – Jhepi - Bijanbari, Darjeeling.  Maneybhanjyang to Tonglu is a steep climb up to Meghma 7 kilometers or 3 - 4 hours trek. Meghma is a small hamlet with few houses & small Monastery & impressive Chorten (stupa). Meghma to Tonglu is anothere 2 kiloneters. Tonglu or the local name Tumling is 3070 meters. There is a Trekkers Hut at Tonglu. Gairibas situated at 2621 meters is downhill and is 9 kilometers i.e. 2 hours walk. Gauribas to Kalipokhri 3170 meters situated at 6 kilometers i.e. 2 - 3 hours is a climb through the rhododendron forest. There is a small pond at Kalipokhri and it never freezes. From Kalipokhri the road descends to Bikhaybhanjyang to Sandakphu is a steep climb of 4 kilometers and takes more than an hour to cover this trek, its strenuous. Sandakphu is at 3636 meters nearly 58 kilometers from Darjeeling and commands one of the most spectacular views. The slopes covered with rhododendrons and silver fir trees and are continuous barrier of snowy mountains. Stretch from Sandakphu to Phalut is the most spectacular of the trek with silver - fir forest and stretches of grassland mounds is spectacular. After walking for a little while the trekker will be followed by the Everest group on the left and Kanchenjunga range right ahead. It is a walk of about 4 ½ - 5 hours and a distance of nearly 21 kilometers. Gurdung, Gorkey, Molley, Samdein, Sabarkum, Rammam, Rimbick, etc are places with trekkers hut and one can stay in any of these places. One can stop in any of the places and change the route if time permits.

Samthar Valley / Charkhole

An excellent view of Kanchenjungha from here in Samthar attracts tourists to this place. The deep silent forest of Pine, Birch, Fir and Orchids with soothing path following the chirps of birus & the view of big sky on the lad of snowcapped Khang-Chen-D-Zongha is a special gift of Samthar. One can view parts of Nathu La and Jalep La. Charkol or Charkhole is situated at an altitude of 5000 feet overlooking a green valley with magnificent views of mount Kanchenjunga. It is one of the offbeat destinations near Kalimpong. It is just 15 kilometers off Loleygaon and 32 kilometers from Kalimpong. It is ideally situated amidst the deep, moist woods of towering pine, cypress, oak, rhododendrons, etc. The valley of Charkol is also a bird watcher’s destination. One can build a bonfire at night under the star studded sky, take a nature walk along the coniferous forests under the warm glow of sun with birds and colorful flora. A place to look for something new, something different, something authentic with options of various adventure also. It is a place with beautiful blend of history, culture and nature. Small trek or for leisure trip this is an ideal place to spend couple of days or even a week in stretch. Rishi, Gumba Dara is within 30 kilometers from Charkol and Rikkisum and Pedong is around 50 kilometers away and Chuikhim is just a walk able from Charkol. Samthar is all for the guest to do. An offbeat beautifully located destinations with many options. One can relax, see the clouds drift by, watch the hill folks lead their leisurely life, and marvel at the bright sky, and the starlit sky at night. One can also take cooking lessons in Nepali or  Lepcha  cuisine and learn how to cook using a solar cooker. Ethnic village exploration walks which can last three half day walking tours to homesteads, village shops, eco friendly agricultural fields, nature doctor, village forests, meeting local people. Learning village skills like basket making, smithy products, mat making, dry wall construction are some of the skills one can learn.

Baramangua / Chotamangua

These are small settlements on route to Darjeeling. Takdah, Tinchuley, Peshok, Lamahatta, Sittong, Chatakpur, Mungpoo are all small places with classic settings. All are one to 2 hours drive from Darjeeling or Siliguri. These are all offbeat destinations. Scenic beauty with nice home stay makes these places popular destinations.
