Shillong

Shillong is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India. It’s a soothing setting amidst the calmness of nature - a treat to the eyes. It is the capital city of the Meghalaya State as well as the district headquarters of the East Khasi Hill District. The name Shillong is derived from U-shyllong, a powerful deity and is built at an altitude of 1491 meters above sea level. The beautiful waterfall Noh-ka-likai is at Cherrapunjee. 

Tourist can explore some of the caves in and around Cherrapunjee. This beautiful hill station is compared with Scotland like the way Kashmir is compared with Switzerland. Due to its latitude, elevation and its sub - tropical climate with mild summers and chilly to cold winters. Shillong is subject to heavy monsoon. Monsoons season spreads in June and it rains almost until the end of August. It receives heavy rainfalls during monsoon and the rainy season usually lasts longer. Umbrella is therefore a necessity while packing bags. October -November and March - April are the best months to visit Shillong. Shillong Golf course is one of the oldest and best natural golf course in the world is considered to be the "Gleneagle of the East" by the United States Golf Association. Shillong is scenic and enjoyable. Places of interest are Ward’s Lake, Lady Hyderi Park, Captain Williamson Sangma State Museum, Zoological Museum, Arunachal Museum, Air Force Museum, Golf Course, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Shillong Peak, Umiam Water Sports Complex, Bishop & Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Diengiei Peak, Dwarksuid, Natures own Museum - Sacred Forest Mawphlang, Kyllang Rock, The Anglican Cemetery & Church, Motphra n and Lewduh.

Nearest airport is Guwahati with direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra, etc. The nearest railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of 103 kilometers and 3 hours drive. Shillong is connected by a long road in between high hills and deep elevations with the rest of the country through Guwahati, Silchar and Garo Hills. Regular bus service is available to & from Guwahati to reach Shillong.

Cherrapunje (Sohra) / Mawsynram

It is 56 kilometers south west of Shillong situated at an altitude of nearly 1300 meters.  Cherapunjee is the wettest place on earth with more than 12,000 mm of rain annually, from June to October.  Cherrapunjee is cloaked in thick mist most of the time but when the weather is fine, one can see Cherrapunjee at its best. It is most spectacular with scores of white – foamy water falls cascading down from great heights, breathtaking landscapes covered by lush greens everywhere. Cherrapunji is situated on the southern tip of a plateau that looms over Bangladesh. The cliffs of Cherrapunji are the first place hit by moisture that forms over the Bay of Bengal. The lovely town is also famous for its limestone caves, orange and honey, a Centre of the Khasi Culture and literature. The oldest Theological College in this region is located here, established by the Welsh Presbyterian Missionaries in 1888, known as Cherrapunjee Theological College. In fact, no other place in India can offer such variety of nature in one place. Places of interest are Dainthlen Falls, Krem Mawmluh, Laitkynsew, Nohkailikai Falls, Nohsngithiang Falls, Thangkharang Bird Sanctuary, Mawlong peak, Thangkarang Park, Noh Sngi Thiang Falls, David Scoot Memorial, Living Root Bridge, Khoh Ramhah, Mawjymbuin cave & Symper Rock. The nearest airport is Guwahati, direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra, etc. The other airport is at Umroi, 35 kilometers from Shillong, which connects this lovely town of Tura by air.  There is a helicopter service from Guwahati Airport to Shillong.  One can reach Cherrapunji via Dawki Landport from Bangladesh. The nearest major railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of 170 kilometers. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail, road and airways. The infrastructure is basic and many roads outside city are in are not in good condition due to heavy rains but within the city the roads are quite good. Nearly 55 kilometers from Shillong is Mawsynram, the rival of Cherrapunjee in terms of annual rainfall. Mawsynram located about 9 kilometers west of Cherrapunji is the wettest place in the world or the place with the highest average annual rainfall. Its major attraction is Mawjymbuin cave with a giant stalagmite in the form of Shivalinga. Near the Shillong Mawsynram - Balat - Ranikor Highway, very near Weiloi Village, once comes across a unique geological formation called Symper Rock. Nearly flat topped loaf-shaped rocky dome rises sharply from the midst of the surrounding hillocks. Guest has to take an exciting uphill trek to reach the summit of the rock. From the top of the hill one can see the gorgeous surrounding hills and valleys and the plain and fast moving rivers of Bangladesh.

Balpakram National Park / Nokrek Biosphere

There are two National parks and two wildlife sanctuaries in Meghalaya. Nobrek and Balpakam are the two National Parks in Meghalaya. Similarly Nongkyllem and Siju are the two wildlife sanctuaries in Meghalaya. Balpakram National Park is a fertile virgin land. The belts of limestone and coal deposits, along with sea shells fossilized into rocks in Balpakram Hill provide immense scope for geological and archeological studies. The animals which can be spotted in this national park are elephants, wild buffaloes, gaur (Indian bison), sambar, barking deer, wild boar, slow loris, capped langur, tigers, leopards, clouded leopards and the rare golden cat. In the Garo hills is the Balpakram National Park and the famous Siju Cave is located very close to the Napak Lake near the Simsang River game reserve which is south east to Nokrek National Park.

Nokrek Biosphere and Siju Caves are located in the Garo Hills district, 2 kilometers from Tura Peak. The reserve is one of the least disturbed forest tracts of the sub-Himalayan ranges. Nokrek has a remnant population of the Red panda. The park had eight species of cats, ranging from Tiger to Marbled cat. There are seven species of primates like the rare Stump-tailed macaque, the Pig-tailed macaque and Hoolocks are common and their calls could be heard. There is a vast range of plants found in the park. The biosphere is a virgin canopy of thick, tall and lush green forests cover Nokrek. There is the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere Reserve covering an area of forty-seven square kilometers. The area is known for its wild varieties of citrus fruits that provide a gene-pool for commercially produced citrus. Famous places in the park include the famous Nokrek Peak, Rongbang Dare Water Fall. It is the first biosphere reserve of its kind in the northeast region. The Garo Hills contain many natural limestone caves. Siju Cave is located very close to the Nophak Lake near the Simsang River Game Reserve. The cave is filled with water and is miles long.

Mairang

Mairang is the headquarters of the sub division and it is located halfway in between Shillong – Nongstoin Highway. 40 kilometers from Shillong, capital of Nongkhlaw states is Mairang. 12 kilometers from Mairang lays the magnificient Kyllang rock. It is a massive dome shape of single rock of granite, which measures close to 1000 feet in diameter. Kyllang Rock is made of a single, huge solid igneous rock is situated at Mawnai about 10 kilometers from Mairang. The top of the dome-shape rock is an attraction. Lum Symper - This place is situated a few kilometers from Weiloi village on the way to Mawkyrwat. It is a beautiful picnic spot. A beautiful memorial in the honor of U Tirot is constructed here in Mairang to commemorate his great feats. U Tirot Sing Syiem (Raja of Nongkhlaw) had spear-headed a war against the British invaders to defend the territorial integrity and cultural identity of the Hynniewtrep people. Mairang is a town and a town area committee in West Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. Places of interest are Jakrem, Thum Fall & Weinia Fall, Mawthadraishan Peak, Kyllang Rock, Lum Symper, Nongkhnum River Island, Angling spot – At confluence of river Kynshi - Wahblei / Khri - Khri Synia / Kynshi - Rilang, etc.

Nearest airport is Guwahati at a distance of nearly 150 kilometers, direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra, etc are available on daily basis. The nearest railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of nearly 150 kilometers. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail, road and airways. Nearly 150 kilometers from Guwahati and 40 kilometers from Shillong is this tourist spot called Mairang. The roads are good as there is rush of tourist.  Most of the tourist spot of Meghalaya lies in this region. Private vehicles are available.

Tura

Tura is close to 325 kilometers from Shillong. It is the head quarter of Garo hills.  It has a picturesque and untouched landscape of hills against a backdrop of low lying plains. There is the mighty river Brahmaputra sweeping curve as it flows towards Bangladesh. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve covers an area of about 800 square kilometers and an exciting trekking track is from Nokrek to Tura through the Tura Peak passing through some thick virgin tropical forests before reaching the Tura Peak. The other interesting spot at the confluence of two rivers namely Ganol and Rongram is an old stone age site which is worth visiting. Several picturesque sites and rivers surrounding Tura but a visit to Badadam area is a must, here one can find the Borangs or the original tree houses are a common sight. Tura – Balpakram – Siju – Shillong – Jowai, Tura – Babadam – Nokrek – Tura and Tura – Siju – Balpakram – Baghmara – Tura are some of the popular tour packages in and from Tura. Places to visit from here are are Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Badadam, Rongrengiri, Willliamnagar, Balpakram, Naphak Lake, Siju Cave, Ganol and Rongram, Tura Peak, etc. Nearest airport is Guwahati at a distance of nearly 230 kilometers. There are daily flights to Delhi and Kolkata. There is a helicopter service from Guwahati Airport to Shillong and Shillong to Tura. The nearest major railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of nearly 230 kilometers from Tura. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail, road and airways. It is 325 kilometers and overnight journey from Shillong by road.  Approximately 230 kilometers from Guwahati is Tura.  Private vehicles are available. Laskein 35 kilometers, Thadlaskein 10 kilometers, Dawki 59 kilometers, New Garampani  67 kilometers, Khliehriat 34 kilometers and Amlarem 27 kilometers from Jowai.

Jowai / Dawki

64 kilometers from Shillong is the headquarters of Jaintia Hills as well as the commercial centre. It is located along side the Myntdu River which encircles two thirds of this ever expanding township. It is 1 ½ hour drive away from Shillong, along the Shillong - Silchar national highway. It is a picturesque town circled by the majestic Myntdu river. Syntu Ksiar is an area worth visiting; it is a part of the Myntdu River where the freedom struggle headed by Kiang Nongbah started at the Madan Madiah. One can see the monument of Kiang Nan bah who was a freedom fighter. The Thadlaskein lake is a popular tourist spot. It is the home of the Pnar Tribes one of the friendliest tribes in the whole of the northeastern parts of india and is situated at an altitude of 1380 meters. Places to visit are many but among them few are Thadlaskein Lake, Umhang Lake, Stone bridge at Thlumuwi, Reliang, Amlarem, New Garampani, Borghat, Nartlang, Syndai, Khliehriat, etc.

Dawki is a destination worth visiting in Meghalaya.  It is certainly a thrilling experience while traveling from Shillong to the international trade route border town of Dawki with a splendid drive of 95 kilometers passing through deep gorges and ravines. On approaching Dawki is the Umngot River, the venue of the annual boat race held during March – April at Umsyiem. The Umngot River is the natural boundary between Ripner or Jaintia Hills with Hima Khyrim of Khasi Hills over which a single span suspension bridge was constructed. This is the gateway to Bangladesh where major export and import transactions take place. Places of interest are Iawmusiang, Ruparsor Bathing Ghat, Annual boat race during spring at the Umgot River.  Nearest airport is Guwahati at a distance of nearly 200 kilometers.
