Darjeeling

This place was just a cluster of villages that was administered intermittently by Nepal and Sikkim. It grew in prominence during the mid 19th century when the British first established a hill station. It was leased from the Chogyal of Sikkim. Later the Britisher discovered that the area was well suited for tea plantations. Thus in 1849, the British annexed the area and Darjeeling became a part of British India. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) popularly known as the toy train was opened in 1881 and now its a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beautiful views including the wonderful view of Kanchenjunga, a variety of trekking options,  rafting, tea tourism, etc makes this place a tourist paradise.  The town is also well connected with Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan, Dooars hence Darjeeling is included in any of the tourist circuit of this sector / region. Development of tourism in Darjeeling district is due to several factors like its location, climate, accessibility and the options of tour packages available. Situated among the undulating mountains with the shimmering Kanchenjunga towering over the sapphire sky, the district is popular called the Queen of the Hills. It is a perfect gateway for those seeking to be in harmony with nature. There is the striking Kurseong at an altitude of 1458 meters. Kalimpong at an altitude of 1250 meters and is the greenest of the places in Darjeeling district. Mirik is surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations. Siliguri is the biggest town of the district; other places of interest are lava, Lolaygaon, etc. Neora Valley and Neora Reserve is a diversified wildlife park. Few trek route

 exist here for leisure and bird watching route. One such route starts from Samsing to Pedong via todey and Tangtey with natural beauty and the view of Rache La Pass. Airways – Nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) 10 kilometers from Siliguri. Kalimpong is 85 kilometers, Darjeeling is 95 Kilometers, Mirik is 60 kilometers and Kurseong 50 kilometers from Siliguri. All tourist destinations of the region are all linked up with roadways, railways and airways. Bagdogra Airport (IXB) which is served by flights from Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai and Delhi on regular basis. Railways - New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) is nearly 90 kilometers from Darjeeling Town and Siliguri is 06 Kilometers. There is a regular train from New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) to Darjeeling town via Sukhna, Malnadi, Kurseong, etc. Roadways – National highway 55 connects Darjeeling and Kurseong to Siliguri. Link up road to all nearby destinations and the places around Darjeeling like Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Assam, etc.  Mirik is nearly 50 kilometers, Kalimpong is 50 kilometers, Kurseong is 35 kilometers, Siliguri is 90 kilometers, Gangtok is 120 kilometers. Nepal border is 40 kilometers from Darjeeling town and Siliguri.
