Samsing & Suntaleykhola / Suntalekhola

Samsing is located in a valley between two rivers Suntaley and Moorty / Murti at a distance of 16 kilometers from Chalsa. Samsing is the eastern end or place for all the villagers and tourists to enter Neora Valley National Park. The place comprises of several attractive places like Suntalekhola, Bhotey Dara, Rongo, Parren, etc. One can avail the adventure of Home stay and come closer to the regional culture and tradition of the place along with the natural scenery. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas and catch the glimpse of wildlife in the Neora Valley National Park will be a cherishing tour which will save a moment of your life in your happy memories. The infrastructure is not so improved yet tourist who are tired of enjoying the stay in some luxurious room can avail the opportunity. One can enjoy the adventure of trekking in national park or adjoining villages then at night a cultural program with items like bonfire, cultural dance and at last a feast with regional drinks can be enjoyed.

Suntalekhola or Suntaley Khola is a small village and a tourist spot in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal. The altitude of the place ranges from roughly 650 to 950 meters. It gets its name from a small stream, Suntaley Khola. Suntaley literally means orange and khola means stream. This place is nearly 5 kilometers from Samsing, which is also a small picturesque serene village with Orange orchard. The way to Suntalekhola is amazing and holds many rare birds, butterflies, Orchids, medicinal plants etc. It is a nice place for zoological or botanical excursion. This is also a birding hotspot and leisure holiday suits this destination well. One can spot Pond Heron, Black Eagle, Hill Partridge, Red-vented Bulbul, Ashy Wood Pigeon, Bronzed Drongo, White-throated Fantail, Blue Rock Thrush, Scarlet Minivet, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Rufous Sibia, Grey treepie, Spangled Drongo, Common Green Magpie, etc. Several trek routes originate from Suntalekhola, most of which are within the Neora Valley National Park adjacent to this place. Suntaleykhola or Suntalekhola is known for its beautiful landscape with green tea gardens, hills and forests, which attract a lot of tourists all over the year. During monsoon the road are treacherous but navigable.

Gorumara National Park

Area of Garumara National Park is nearly 80 square kilometres and is situated in Malbazar subdivision of Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal, India. Nearest town is Lataguri nearly 9 kilometres from the Gorumara Park. Major cities near Gorumara are Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, etc. It is nearly 90 kilometres from Siliguri. Best season is November to April. The park has five watch towers namely Jatraprasad Watch Tower (Named after a legendary elephant), Rhino Observation Point (Near Gorumara forest bungalow), Chandrachur Watch Tower (Near Murti forest bungalow), Chukchuki Bird-watching Point (For bird watching) and Medhla. Forest safari revolves around this watch points. Tickets are issued in advance for the day and guest are informed accordingly to book in advance. It is the national park famous for breeding rare one horned rhinoceros. One can spot the mighty bison, leopard, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars and the rarest variety of animals and birds including plenty of peacocks. This sanctuary has a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna. Major flora of the Garumara National Park are Sal, Rain Tree (Shirish), Silk Cotton (Shimul) tree, various kind of Bamboo groves, Terai grassland vegetation and tropical riverine reeds. The texture of colossal trees sheltering varieties of orchids resounded with sound of birds and wild animals make it a veritable paradise for lovers of nature and eco - tourism. The watchtower is the best place to observe wild animals. Most common animals that can be spotted are one horned Indian rhino, Elephant, Indian Bison, Leopards and deer as they regularly come to the salt reservoir just below the tower. Visitors need to obtain a special permission to enter into the core area of the park except from 15th June to 15th September each year when the forest is close annually. Best Season to visit is October to May, particularly March and April or October and November when new vegetation grows. The place is known for its forested area. Few places of interest are Bindu, Rongo, Jhalong, Samsing, Suntaleykhola, Jalpesh, Kathambari, Bodaganj, etc. The place is also known for the birds as there are quite a number of water bodies and few fast flowing rivers. Gorumara is surrounded by Chapramari, Neora Valley, Mahanada Wildlife Sanctuary and few isolated temples with many followers. It is a nice place for weekend with very scenic surrounding and minimum activities. 

Chapramari Sanctuary

Chapramari is nearly 16 Kilometres from Chalsa Railway Station, close to Lataguri or Gorumara National park. From Chalsa towards north is Chapramari and towards south is Gorumara forest. It is situated nearly 12 Kilometers away from the National Highway 31 (N H 31 connects Siliguri to Guwahati) and nearly 90 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) or Bagdogra Airport (IXB). A visit for a couple of days to the greenery of the nature and resting in the nights in the midst of forests, rivers and wildlife will positively instill new life and stimulation. This sanctuary is with dense greenery which provides a natural home to the animals and birds living here. With very tall trees and thick bower of greenery, this sanctuary is a wildlife heaven. Khunia beat is famous for Bison, leopard, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars and Elephant herds. The sanctuary is a paradise for birds which includes Green Magpie, Indian Treepie, Thrush, Scarlet Minivet, Hill Mayna, White Breasted Kingfisher, Hornbill, Large Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Adjutant Stork etc. The common water birds are the large and little Cormorant, Darter & Egret. Migratory birds include the Brahminy, Teals, etc. It has fascinating diversity of flora and fauna and the vast texture of massive trees sheltering varieties of orchids will haunt you long after you leave the place. The strategically positioned watchtower is the best place to observe wild animals. Most common animals in the area are one horned Indian rhino, peacocks, Elephant, Indian Bison, Leopards and deer as they regularly come to the salt reservoir near the huge water body in front of the forest. It is advisable for all to stay in group or with the forest guide and never to leave the group alone. Visitors need to obtain a special permission to enter into the core area of the park except from 15th June to 15th September each year when the forest is close annually. The bordering area of the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary has some villages like Khunia, Sipchu, Panjhora, etc. Rajbanshi, Nepali, Rava, Munda and Oraon are some of the community settled here. One can visit any of the villages to get an idea of their culture and lifestyle. They practice their tribal music and dance in the evening and better so during the festivals.

Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary

Jaldapara is nearly 80 kilometers from Chalsa Railway Station and is situated in Madarihat adjacent to the main road. On the National Highway number 31 and 126 kilometers from Siliguri, is this beautiful sanctuary. Spread over an area of approximately 114 kilometers square and at an altitude of 61 meters is one of the finest Sanctuaries of the region. One can run wild in the various Sanctuaries, National Parks & Tiger Reserves that are on offer in Duars. One can spot the mighty bison, leopard, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars. Also there are some of the rarest variety of animals and birds including plenty of peacocks. Pied hornbill, Racket - tailed drongo, Paradise flycatcher, Crested Eagle, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, Shikra, Jungle fowl, Peafowl, Partridges and many other bird species can be found here. Visitors need to obtain a special permission to enter into the core area of the park except from 15th June to 15th September each year when the forest is close annually.. Best Season to visit is October to May, particularly March and April or October and November when new grass is grows. Jaldapara is ideally located in the central Dooars of West Bengal. Few places of interest which can be covered from Jaldapara or Madarihat are Chilapata, Toto Para, Khayerbari, Raimatang, Suntalekhola, Buxa & Jayanti, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, etc. Even one can visit Phuentsholing, the entry point to Bhutan. Jaldapara forest itself has elephant ride and Jeep safari option for the tourist. Chilapata is half way between Jaldapara and Buxa Tiger reserve. It is a new destination and has few home stay and hotels. One can enjoy staying here and visiting places nearby. It is a forested area with diversified flora and Fauna. One can also visit Cooch Behar and nearby places.

Neora National Park

It is situated adjacent to Kalimpong and is one of the most diversified parks of the region. Its altitude also ranges quite high to the plains of Dooars. It is under the Kalimpong forest division and stretches to the north of Dooars. Known for the diversified wildlife like the Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Clouded Leopard, Siberian Weasel, Asiatic black bear, barking deer, Himalayan Tahr, goral, gaur and pangolin. Birds of the region include Monal pheasant, hornbills, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Eurasian Sparrow hawks, Kalij Pheasant, etc. It is a hotspot for birding along with Chapramari and Gajoldoba which is bit away from Neora but the birds fly in this direction.  The forest has more than 60 varieties of Orchids. Neora Valley has positional advantage as it lies between the plains of Dooars and the hills of Darjeeling, Sikkim Himalayas and Bhutan. This valley is accessible from Kalimpong and Dooars. Trek route originates from either Kalimpong and ends in Dooars or Vice Versa. One can start from Dooars via samsing or Suntalekhola or from Parren near Jhalong, Bindu. The route passes through the forest and reaches a spot called today Tangtey. Rache La pass is visible from many of the points on the route. The diversified area is scenic and worth trekking. The trek starts from four nights and can last up to seven nights. Forest permit is required.  Few places of this Park are worth visiting or trekking. The forest is always lush green and is the least explored park of the region. There is a trolley ride arranged by the forest department connecting Neora National Park. The trek route through this forest passes via today, Tangtey, Rache La Pass and reach Pedong, Lava, or nearby places. The route is rich in wildlife and one can spot birds and wildlife quite easily. Special permit has to be issued and the route is three to six nights.

Buxa Tiger Reserve

It is situated nearly 120 kilometers from Aranya and nearly 200 kilometers from Siliguri. It is close to Rajabhatkhawa station and Alipurduar junction station. This reserve forest is one of the most fascinating diversity of flora and fauna with rivers, high altitude lake and with varied altitude. Phipsu Park of Bhutan is contagious to Buxa Tiger Reserve and there are a few treks from Buxar to Bhutan. Texture of massive trees sheltering varieties of orchids, resounded with echo of birds and wild animals make it a veritable paradise for lovers of nature. It is a tourist hotspot and is a paradise for migratory birds along with Rasikbill. Small pond on hilltop with innumerable numbers of tortoise is worth visiting. Safari is done in this forest.  It is declared a National Park in January 1992. The name Buxa has been derived from Buxa Fort - a fort at an altitude of 850 meters on the Sinchula Range used for detainees of freedom movement of India. There is the historic ruin of the cellular jail and is worth visiting; the other is in Andaman Nicobar Island. It offers its visitors a plethora of Wildlife. Buxa is rich with bio-diversity and has a great and diversified range of rare orchids and plants including medicinal plants. This national park is spread over 759 square kilometers and has contagious forest of other ranges. Animals spotted in the park include, the tiger, civet, red jungle fowls, etc. Visitors need to obtain a special permission to enter into the core area of the park except from 15th June to 15th September each year when the forest is close annually. There are few places of interest nearby like Lepchakha, Chunabhatti, Mahaakal temple, Raimatang, Nimati, Bhutan ghat, etc. Some are along the trekking route others can be visited by small drive but the best is to stay in Jayanti and enjoy the wildlife and the surrounding villages. Chilapata is half way between Jaldapara and Buxa Tiger reserve. It is a new destination and has few home stay and hotels. One can enjoy staying here and visiting places nearby. It is a forested area with diversified flora and Fauna. Lepchakha and Buxa fort trek is quite popular. Trek from Raimatang to Lepchakha and to Buxa fort. The route has many small settlements like Rupam valley, Chunabhatti, Omchulum, Rovers point, etc.
